Hildingsson is the Social Democrats’ declared candidate amid a fractured incumbent alliance, so his formal election as Regional Board Chair is likely.

Hildingsson has the clearest documented path: he is the Social Democrats’ declared candidate, a senior party figure has promoted him as leader of a stable governing arrangement, and the previous three-party cooperation has collapsed. His existing Regional Board role adds institutional standing. The outcome remains unsettled because no election result or coalition agreement is available, and Blekinge’s recent governing arrangements have been unstable. Even so, Hildingsson’s formal election is likely, with post-election coalition bargaining the main remaining risk.

Points to YES

The Social Democrats have designated Hildingsson as their candidate for Regional Board Chair.
On April 11, 2026, Lars Hildingsson was identified as the Social Democrats’ candidate for Chair of the Regional Board of Region Blekinge.
A senior Social Democrat has publicly promoted Hildingsson as the leader of a stable regional administration.
On August 31, 2026, Heléne Björklund said she wanted Lars Hildingsson to lead a stable regional governing arrangement.
The collapse of the previous three-party cooperation weakens the clearest route for incumbent parties to retain the chairmanship.
By August 27, 2026, the governing cooperation among the Moderates, Sweden Democrats and Christian Democrats in Region Blekinge had fallen apart.

Points to NO

Repeated breakdowns in regional governing arrangements make the eventual coalition and chair selection less predictable.
As of August 28, 2026, two governing arrangements in Region Blekinge had broken apart during the preceding four years.
