Sustained double-digit polling leads across multiple surveys make Eduardo Paes highly likely to win the Rio de Janeiro governorship.
Eduardo Paes has maintained a consistent double-digit lead over Douglas Ruas in every major poll since April 2026, with first-round numbers hovering around 39-43% and valid-vote shares near 49% – just shy of an outright majority. The removal of Cláudio Castro, his strongest potential opponent, via an ineligibility ruling in March 2026 cleared the field. Paes also benefits from President Lula's endorsement in a state where Lula remains popular. The large undecided bloc (40% in spontaneous polling) introduces some uncertainty, but late deciders historically break toward the known frontrunner in Brazilian elections. Though a first-round win is not guaranteed, the cumulative evidence makes his ultimate victory highly likely, whether on October 4 or in a runoff on October 25.
